Application

This unit describes the performance outcomes required to assess and rectify paintwork on vehicle bodies and components as a result of manufacturing and production line damage or defective painting procedures.

It applies to those in an automotive manufacturing environment and involves the application of skills and knowledge at a specialist level.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Plan and prepare

1.1 Workplace procedures  for the assessment and repair of vehicle paintwork are identified

1.2 Work instructions, rectification reports and quality standards are obtained and confirmed

1.3 Spray painting tools, equipment and materials are identified, prepared and checked for correct operation

2. Assess paintwork defects

2.1 Vehicle body panels and components are inspected to confirm extent and nature of paint defect

2.2 Damaged or defective paintwork is assessed and a repair plan developed and confirmed

3. Rectify paintwork defects

3.1 Defective areas are prepared

3.2 Surrounding areas are protected from repair activities

3.3 Paint defects are rectified in line with vehicle specifications and workplace quality standards

3.4 Paint drying method is selected and applied

3.5 Repaired vehicle is prepared for final inspection and returned to production sequence

4. Complete work processes

4.1 Work area is cleaned, and materials disposed of or recycled according to workplace procedures

4.2 Tools and equipment are cleaned, checked and stored according to workplace procedures

4.3 Faulty equipment is identified, tagged and reported to supervisor

4.4 Workplace documentation  is completed according to workplace procedures

Performance Evidence

Before competency can be determined, individuals must have competently rectified minor faults in vehicle and component paintwork on a minimum of two occasions.

Individuals must demonstrate they can:

  • locate, interpret and apply relevant rectification information and specifications
  • use spray painting tools, equipment and materials safely
  • mix and apply paint according to workplace procedures and specifications
  • rectify minor paint defects according to workplace quality standards, job specifications, work health and safety (WHS) requirements, and workplace procedures.

Knowledge Evidence

Individuals must be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

  • WHS requirements to rectify vehicle paintwork
  • workplace procedures to rectify vehicle paintwork
  • procedures for ensuring serviceability of equipment
  • paint quality standards
  • automotive refinishing terminology
  • vehicle painting techniques
  • paint viscosity
  • paint damage and defects
  • procedures for the safe use of painting tools and equipment
  • processes for calculating, mixing and applying paint material
  • location of paint safety data sheets (SDS)
  • job specifications
  • materials handling, storage and waste management procedures.

Assessment Conditions

Assessors must satisfy SNR/AQTF assessor requirements.

Competency is to be assessed in the workplace or a simulated environment that accurately reflects performance in a real workplace setting.

Where assessment of competency includes third-party evidence, individuals must provide evidence that links them to the vehicles that they have worked on, e.g. repair orders.

Assessors must verify performance evidence through questioning on skills and knowledge to ensure correct interpretation and application.

The following resources must be made available:

  • automotive manufacturing workplace or simulated workplace
  • vehicles or components that require paint rectification
  • paint measuring equipment
  • primers, paint and clear coats
  • vehicle and paint codes and specifications
  • workplace documentation, including SDS
  • workplace procedures relating to rectifying vehicle paintwork
  • work instructions relating to rectifying vehicle paintwork
  • spray painting tools and equipment for rectifying vehicle paintwork
  • approved spray painting and preparation booths.
